Cadillac’s first range of 16-cylinder cars was launched in January 1930 and remained the company’s flagship offering through 1940. The model’s second generation was launched in late 1937 with revised front-end styling and a redesigned flathead engine in place of the first generation’s overhead-valve powerplant. Riding on a channel-beam X-frame chassis with a 141” wheelbase, the Series 90 V16 was offered with 12 different Fleetwood body styles in 1938 in both open and closed configurations.
This example’s two-door convertible coupe bodywork was originally finished in Chinchilla Gray and received a repaint in its current shade of burgundy in the 1990s. The hood panel is said to have undergone paintwork during a freshening between 2006 and 2007 that also included replating of the bumpers. Styling includes body-color fender spears, horizontal louvers alongside the engine compartment, a “flying goddess” hood ornament that serves as a latch, a T-shaped trunk handle, and a tan convertible top.
Body-color steel wheels wear bright covers with V16 logos and are wrapped in Firestone wide-whitewall tires measuring 7.50-16. Dual side-mount spares are recessed into the front fenders and are housed under body-color covers. Stopping is handled by hydraulic drum brakes at each corner. The selling dealer notes that the car pulls to the right upon hard braking.
The cabin features a front bench seat upholstered in tufted tan leather with color-matched upholstery over the door panels, rear side panels, and fold-down rear seats. The tan carpeting and kick panels are said to have been replaced in 2008. Additional interior features include dual grain wood door caps, ashtrays in each rear side panel, roll-up side windows, crank-operated quarter vent windows, a lockable glovebox, a heater/defroster, and a Master radio with a drum-style dial.
The banjo-spoke “flex” steering wheel sits ahead of a burl-wood-grain metal dash that houses a square 110-mph speedometer flanked by gauges monitoring coolant temperature, fuel level, oil pressure, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows 74k miles, with true mileage unknown. A rectangular electric clock is situated amid the speaker grille. The selling dealer notes that the speedometer sticks on occasion.
The 431ci V16 features a 135° angle between cylinder banks, nine main crankshaft bearings, side valves, dual 1⅛” carburetors, and twin distributors, coils, fuel pumps, and water pumps. Factory-rated output was 185 horsepower at 3,600 rpm. The generator is said to have been rebuilt between 2006 and 2007, at which time the manifolds were porcelainized and various ancillaries were refinished.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a three-speed manual transmission that is said to have been rebuilt during the 2006-2007 refresh. Suspension comprises a knee-action front setup with double-acting lever-arm hydraulic shock absorbers serving as upper links and a leaf-sprung solid rear axle with hydraulic lever-arm shocks that are manually adjustable for firmness.
The trim tag shows Fleetwood style number 9067 as well as body number nine and special-order interior trim number 3049. Chassis number 5270150 is shown stamped on the frame in the photo gallery below, while number 5270137 is shown stamped on the engine block and is 13 numbers prior to the car’s original engine number.
The build sheet lists original delivery to Cadillac Auto Company of Boston as well the options including a flex steering wheel, a heater/defroster, a Master radio and aerial, and whitewall tires. CCCA Senior National First Prize badge number 2780 is shown in the gallery below.
