A successor to the Convertible D, the roadster model was introduced for the 1960 model year and was updated for its third and final year with T6 bodywork incorporating dual rear grilles. Prior to that transition, production was moved from Karosseriewerke Drauz in Germany to Belgian importer D’Ieteren.
Originally finished in Champagne Yellow, this example was repainted in its current shade of silver during the refurbishment that was overseen by Personalized Autohauz in San Diego, California, between 2015 and 2018. Work involved replacement of various body seals in addition to replacement or re-plating of the exterior trim pieces. The final three digits of the chassis number are shown stamped on the deck lid and front hood hinge in the photo gallery below, while the number’s last two digits can be seen stamped inside the fuel filler flap.
Chrome-finished 15” steel wheels display November 1971 date codes and are wrapped in 185/65 Michelin Defender tires that were mounted in 2018. A spare secured in the front compartment wears older Michelin XWX rubber. Four-wheel disc brakes from a 356C were added in the late 1960s, and the system was updated with a dual-circuit master cylinder during the 2010s refurbishment. The calipers were also overhauled, while the rotors were turned and the hoses, pads, lines, and front rotors were replaced.
The cabin was re-trimmed during the refurbishment and features red leatherette over fiberglass Speedster-style fixed-back bucket seats with matching upholstery on the door panels and dash. Oatmeal square-weave carpeting covers the seatbacks, sills, and rear shelf, while black rubber mats line the footwells. Additional features include red lap belts, door pockets, a chromed passenger grab handle, roll-up windows, and a black top boot.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel sits ahead of green-letter VDO instrumentation that includes a 6k-rpm tachometer, a 120-mph speedometer, and a combination gauge monitoring oil temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 87k miles.
The replacement 356SC Type 616/16 flat-four was overhauled to a displacement of 1,720cc by Personalized Autohaus in 2016 with 86mm-bore JE pistons and cylinders as well as replacement main and rod bearings, valves, valve springs, and pushrod tubes. The twin Solex carburetors, fuel pump, and fuel petcock were rebuilt, while a six-volt electric fuel pump was added. An aluminum oil cooler was also installed along with a rebuilt starter and a replacement wiring harness. Results from dynamometer testing are shown in the gallery below.
The engine case is stamped with number P*812427*, and additional case stampings are shown in the gallery below. Number 50729 is shown stamped on the transaxle housing in the gallery, matching the number listed on the Kardex.
The four-speed manual transaxle was overhauled with replacement synchros and bearings, while the flywheel was resurfaced and the clutch disc, clutch plate, and throwout bearing were replaced. The suspension was also refreshed with replacement shock absorbers and bushings, and the steering damper and tie rod ends were replaced. An uninstalled camber compensator is included in the sale.
