The CSL was introduced at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show after being developed as a homologation model for European touring car competition. The “L” variant was distinguished from standard CS models by approximately 440 pounds of weight-saving measures. Additional characteristics exclusive to the lightweight model included racing-style hood release pins.

Delivered from the factory in Verona Red (24), the Karmann-built steel bodywork on this example is said to have been refinished in its factory color under previous ownership. Features include a heated rear window, black 3.0 CSL beltline stripes, and an aluminum alloy trunk lid and hood. Photos of Duro-Glas-1 window etchings can be seen in the gallery below. Paint bubbles are visible on the wheel arches and on the doors.
The 14″ Alpina wheels wear BMW center caps and are mounted with 205/70 Michelin XWX tires that were installed under current ownership. The CSL suspension system used Bilstein gas-pressurized dampers and progressive-rate springs, and replacement lower control arms, ball joints, bushings, shocks, struts, and steering links are also said to have been installed under current ownership. Stopping power is provided by discs at all four corners, and a brake fluid flush was performed under current ownership.
The cabin features Scheel front bucket seats and rear seating with black leatherette bolsters and matching cloth inserts. A matching headliner and carpets are fitted, and additional equipment includes manual crank windows, a Sony cassette player, and woodgrain trim on the dashboard and door panels. Tears on the rear seatbacks can be seen in the gallery.
The Petri steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a 240-km/h speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, a combination gauge, and a clock. The five-digit odometer shows 63k kilometers (~39k miles), approximately 500 kilometers of which were added under current ownership.
The 3.0-liter M30 inline-six features Bosch electronic fuel injection and produced 200 horsepower and 204 lb-ft of torque when new. The engine is said to be a replacement unit that was installed under previous ownership, and it features an X stamping on the VIN pad, while the cylinder head is said to date from 1976. Replacement spark plugs were installed under current ownership. The oil was changed and the coolant also replaced. Results from a recent compression test can be seen in the gallery.
