The Berlinetta Boxer model was styled by Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti and debuted at the 1971 Turin Auto Show. The car features a steel-paneled cabin section paired with a tubular chassis. Aluminum is incorporated for the doors and front and rear clamshells, while the lower panels are fiberglass. The 512 BBi variant was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1981. The cars were not officially offered in the US and were imported and federalized in-period via the gray market.
This example left the factory finished in Rosso Corsa and was repainted in 2016 by Hot Rods and Hobbies in Signal Hill, California, following repairs to the passenger-side door skin. Features include pop-up headlights, fog lights, a front spoiler, aluminum hood louvers, NACA side ducts, quad exhaust outlets, and a black rear high-mount spoiler and engine lid grilles.
Center-lock 15″ five-spoke alloy wheels are mounted with 240/55VR415 Michelin TRX tires. The 512 BBi features a fully independent suspension with unequal-length double wishbones, coilovers up front, a double coilover setup out back, and anti-roll bars fore and aft. Stopping power is provided by ventilated discs at all four corners. The rear shocks and struts were replaced in 2005. Service in 2015 involved overhauling the rear brake calipers, replacing the brake lines and pads, and flushing the fluid.
The cabin was refreshed under current ownership and features seats that have been reupholstered in black leather with red piping and insert trim. Amenities include a gated shifter, air conditioning, power windows, a Pioneer graphic equalizer, and a Sony CD stereo paired with Pioneer speakers. Wear is noted on the driver-side carpeting.
The three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel frames Veglia instrumentation including a 200-mph speedometer, a 10k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges that extend to the center of the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows 24k miles, approximately 5k of which were added under current ownership.
The 4.9-liter F110A flat-12 features Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection utilizing twin CIS fuel distributors and was factory rated at 340 horsepower. The car previously underwent a twin-turbo conversion, which was reversed during a 2015 engine overhaul that involved replacing the bearings, pistons and rings, valve guides, hoses, engine gaskets, clutch, and exhaust system. The air tubes and air boxes were fabricated and powder-coated at that time, and an engine-out timing belt service was carried out in 2018. Additional work performed under current ownership included re-coring the radiator, recharging the air conditioning system, resurfacing the flywheel, and replacing the ignition components, hoses, and clutch throwout bearing. The selling dealer states that the emissions equipment has been removed.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle. Service under current ownership involved overhauling the transmission with replacement ring and pinion gears in 2018 as well as replacing the clutch assembly in 2021.
Manufacturer’s literature is included in the sale along with an award from the 2022 Concorso Italiano, a removed stereo and speakers, a tool kit and jack, and service records.
