Penned by Marc Deschamps and Marcello Gandini at Bertone, the R5 Turbo debuted at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1980 and was designed to compete in FIA Group 4 racing. This example left the factory finished in Bordeaux (721) and features front and rear fog lights, boxed fender flares, quarter panel intakes, and rubber roof gutters. Two cracks in the bodywork were repaired in 2008. The seller notes a ding in the left door and various imperfections in the finish, close-up photos of which are presented in the gallery along with paint meter readings taken from around the body.
Double-staggered metric alloy wheels feature black-finished recesses, and wear Michelin TRX tires showing 2006 date codes. A steel spare is stored in the front trunk. The car rides on an independent double-wishbone suspension with torsion bars up front and a coil spring setup out back. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes.
The cabin houses bucket seats trimmed in tan cloth upholstery accompanied by color-coordinated door panels and Turbo 2-branded floor mats. The side mirrors and door windows are power-operated, while the hinged rear quarter windows swing away to access the cargo bay. The seller states that the left seat cover is slipping and the headliner is sagging, as shown in the gallery below.
The leather-wrapped Iso-Delta steering wheel frames Jaeger instrumentation consisting of a 150-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. Jaeger oil pressure and boost gauges are mounted in the center of the dash. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows 35k kilometers (~22k miles), approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership.
The cargo shelf lifts to expose an insulated engine bay that houses a 1,397cc inline-four equipped with a single Garrett turbocharger and Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. Factory rated output was 160 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque. The fuel distributor was rebuilt and the fuel pumps were replaced in 2008. An electric fan was installed under current ownership.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle. Work performed in 2008 involved rebuilding the clutch discs, resurfacing the flywheel, and replacing the rear main seal. The seller notes that shifts from first to second gear are stiff when cold.
