The Grand National Experimental was created in partnership with ASC/McLaren to celebrate the end of the vehicle’s production run. All 547 examples were finished in black, and unique cosmetic details compared to the standard Grand National included composite wheel arch flares, heat-extracting fender vents, a three-piece rear spoiler, and GNX badging. This vehicle was previously listed on BaT in October 2021 and the winning bidder failed to follow through with their commitment to purchase after attempting to withdraw their bid during the auction. This was not due to any fault with the vehicle. The winner has been banned from future participation on BaT and their buyer’s fee was not refunded.
Factory 16″ basketweave wheels feature GNX-branded center caps and wear 245/50 front and 255/50 rear Goodyear Eagle VR50 tires. The front suspension components were unchanged from those of the standard Grand National, while upgrades at the rear consisted of a Panhard rod and torque arm as well as an additional frame crossmember. Braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums. A set of reproduction GNX-style wheels with black mesh centers and polished lips is included in the sale and can be seen in the gallery below.
The cabin is upholstered in black and Sand Gray cloth, and the front seat headrests feature embroidered Turbo 6 logos. Amenities include a power-adjustable driver’s seat, air conditioning, cruise control, power accessories, and a GM-Delco AM/FM cassette stereo with a graphic equalizer. A plaque mounted to the dashboard identifies this as car #389.
The leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel frames GNX-specific Stewart Warner instrumentation consisting of a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for boost pressure, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows just under 1,200 miles.
The 3.8-liter V6 was modified by ASC/McLaren with a Garrett T3 turbocharger under a heat shield with GNX lettering, a larger air-to-air intercooler, and a low-restriction exhaust system. Factory-rated output was 276 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque. A summary of work performed in July 2021 by California Car Company in Roswell, Georgia can be seen in the photo gallery below. Service included changing the oil and transmission fluid and replacing the following components:
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed TH200-4R transmission with a factory-upgraded oil cooler and a limited-slip differential wearing a GNX-embossed aluminum rear cover. Additional underside photos are presented in the gallery below.
The window sticker affixed to the passenger window shows factory equipment, the $10,995 GNX option, and a total price of $29,290. The original sales paperwork, certificate of origin, warranty information, manufacturer and dealer delivery letters, and a GNX supplemental manual are included in the sale along with a GNX jacket and book.
