An open-top variant of the M3 was introduced in mid-1988 and sold only in the European market. The model was based on the standard version of the E30 convertible and hand-assembled at BMW’s Motorsport facility in Garching, Germany. Bodywork shared with M3 coupes includes flared fenders, revised bumpers, and side skirts, although convertibles utilize a standard trunk lid without a spoiler.
This example is finished in Diamond Black Metallic and features a black soft top, headlight wipers, fog lights, painted mirror caps, and twin exhaust outlets. A majority of the seller’s photos were taken prior to the car’s importation to the U.S.
Silver-finished 16″ basketweave wheels feature BMW center caps and are mounted with Pirelli P700 tires that date to the 1990s. M3 convertibles were equipped with different shocks and springs than their coupe counterparts in order to accommodate an increased curb weight, but shared the rest of the standard M3’s suspension.
The cabin features manually adjustable heated front sport seats and a rear bench upholstered in silver leather with tri-color accents. Amenities include an onboard computer, power windows, mirrors, and locks, and a BMW Bavaria C Business cassette stereo.
The four-spoke leather-wrapped airbag steering wheel fronts VDO instrumentation including a 260-km/h speedometer and an 8k-rpm tachometer as well as gauges for oil temperature, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows just over 1,100 kilometers (~710 miles), approximately two of which were added under current ownership.
The 2.3-liter S14 inline-four was factory rated at 215 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque. Recent service included replacing the battery, fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel sending unit, fuel filter, and fuel lines in addition to cleaning the injectors.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Getrag five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.
The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and shows history in Montana with two entries in 2023.
