Introduced to the Buick Gran Sport lineup in mid-1970, the GSX model was effectively an $1,196 option package that included braking and suspension upgrades, a black chin spoiler, full-length side stripes, GSX badges and decals, and a rear wing, plus a hood with dual air intakes, wide black stripes, and a tachometer.
A total of 678 examples of the GSX were built. This car is Saturn Yellow (Q-Q)—one of only two available colors—and it was reportedly refinished with lacquer paint approximately 15 years ago under prior ownership. Buick Rallye wheels measuring 15×7″ are mounted on Goodyear Polyglas GT tires. The GSX’s standard Rallye Ride Control suspension features a rear stabilizer bar, firmer shocks and springs, and a rear lower control-arm assembly. Power-assisted braking is enabled by vented discs in front and finned drums at the rear.
The cabin is trimmed in black vinyl over the front bucket seats as well as the rear bench, with woodgrain trim on the dashboard and the center console. Additional features include deluxe armrests, rear courtesy lamps, black lap belts for five occupants, and a Sonomatic radio.
Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer in between a Rallye clock and gauges for monitoring fuel level, oil pressure, amperage, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows just under 1,100 miles, approximately 700 of which have been added under current ownership; true mileage is unknown.
Power comes from a 455ci V8 with the optional Stage 1 performance package, which featured a revised cam profile, raised compression from 10.0:1 to 10.5:1, and increased output by 10 horsepower for a total of 360 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. Induction is through a Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor. The engine was rebuilt in 2019 by VanGordon Racing Engines of Upland, California, as noted on an invoice from The Care Shop of Chino, California. The air-conditioning compressor and the power-steering gearbox have been replaced under current ownership, and additional service items are detailed in the photo gallery. A numbers-matching three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels through a 10-bolt Positraction limited-slip axle. Additional underside images are provided in the gallery below.
A copy of the dealer invoice lists the A9 GSX option, A1 Stage 1 performance package, automatic transmission, full-length console, power disc brakes, power steering, Sonomatic radio, air conditioning, and tinted glass as optional equipment, along with delivery to Colonial Buick. Also pictured in the gallery is the factory build sheet, Buick GS Nationals scorecards, and other documentation.
