The Tipo AM116 was designed by Virginio Vairo at Carrozzeria Vignale and debuted at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show. Named to commemorate the 8CTF race cars that won the 1939 and 1940 Indianapolis 500, the Indy featured unibody construction and shared running gear with the contemporary Ghibli. This example was repainted blue under previous ownership and features chrome bumpers, pop-up headlights, a driver-side mirror, twin ANSA exhaust outlets, and a rear hatch. The rear window defogger does not work, and areas of discoloration on the hood and roof can be seen in the gallery along with imperfections on the bumpers.
The 14″ Borrani wheels feature aluminum centers riveted to steel barrels, and they wear Maserati trident center caps. The 205VR14 Michelin XWX tires were mounted by Scuderia Performante of Malvern, Pennsylvania, in July 2022, and a matching spare wheel and tire are mounted beneath the cargo floor. The Indy features a double-wishbone front suspension and a live rear axle with leaf springs. Stopping power is provided by Girling four-wheel disc brakes.
The 2+2 cabin features front and rear seats that were reupholstered in black leather under previous ownership. Features include power windows and reclining front bucket seats with adjustable headrests. The Smiths clock mounted ahead of the front passenger does not work.
The leather-wrapped MOMO Prototipo steering wheel is mounted on an adjustable column ahead of Veglia Borletti instrumentation including a tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline, a 300-km/h speedometer, and gauges for water temperature, amperage, oil pressure, oil temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows under 84k kilometers (~52k miles), approximately 2k kilometers of which were added under the seller’s ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 4.2-liter V8 features a 90° bank angle as well as dual overhead camshafts per cylinder bank and quad Weber 42 DCNF carburetors. It was factory rated at 260 horsepower at 5,500 rpm. A new battery was installed in July 2022, and an oil change was also performed at that time.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a ZF five-speed manual transmission. The car is equipped with twin fuel tanks that can be selected via a switch on the dashboard.
