Mercedes-Benz introduced the 190E Evolution as a limited-production homologation variant for the 1989 model year. Just 502 examples were built, with each featuring revised front and rear valances, a larger rear wing, and pronounced fender flares. Just 502 examples were built, with each featuring revised front and rear valances, a larger rear wing, and pronounced fender flares. All were painted Blue-Black Metallic (199U) from the factory, and this example is said to have been refinished under previous ownership.
Factory 16″ alloy wheels are mounted with 225/45 Continental SportContact 2 tires. The Evolution was lowered by 19mm compared to the standard 2.5-16, and its track width was increased by 14mm in front and 24mm at the rear. The adjustable self-leveling suspension on this example was reportedly overhauled in November 2020, at which time the disc brakes were also serviced with new pads, rotors, and fluid.
The cabin features bolstered sport seats upholstered in black leather with tartan cloth inserts as well as matching door panels, black carpeting, and Zebrano wood trim on the center console. Amenities include power windows, manually-adjusted mirrors, and an Alpine CD stereo, though the car does not have air conditioning.
The four-spoke steering wheel frames a 260-km/h speedometer, a tachometer with a 7,250-rpm redline and a nested clock, and gauges for coolant temperature, fuel level, oil pressure, and fuel economy. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows approximately 70k kilometers (~43k miles), 250 of which have been added by the selling dealer. A clock and gauges displaying oil temperature and voltage are located in the center stack.
The 2.5-liter DOHC inline-four was developed by Cosworth with a shorter stroke and larger bore than its counterpart in the standard 2.5-16 model, and factory-rated output was 202 horsepower. The spark plugs, engine mounts, high-pressure fuel line, and fuel injectors were replaced in November 2020 according to the selling dealer, who also notes that the engine oil, air filter, transmission fluid, and differential oil were changed.
