BMW introduced the M3 Evolution as a limited-production homologation model beginning with the 1987 model year, and the Sport Evolution was produced for 1990 with increased power and revised bodywork. This example is finished in Jet Black and features a multi-position front splitter, brake ducts in place of fog lights, thinner glass, a sunroof, headlight washers, an adjustable rear spoiler, red bumper accents, and high-arch front fenders designed to clear 18″ wheels for racing. The selling dealer notes that several body panels have been repainted, and paint meter readings are presented in the photo gallery. The hood and front fascia show stone chips, and rust is present at the left-front corner of the windshield. The spoiler and windshield were replaced under prior ownership.
Gray 16″ basketweave wheels feature BMW center caps and are mounted with 225/45 Hankook Ventus Prime2 tires. Factory equipment included electronically adjustable dampers with sport springs, thicker anti-roll bars, and a revised steering caster angle. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs. The brake pads and rotors were replaced in preparation for the sale.
The cabin features manually adjustable front Recaro sport seats as well as a rear bench upholstered in black Nappa leather with M-Tech accents and red seat belts. Amenities include an onboard computer, an AM/FM/cassette stereo, a BMW sound system, air conditioning, cruise control, adjustable rear headrests, a rear sunblind, and power windows, mirrors, and locks. Three suspension settings are selectable via a rotary knob located on the center console, and a plaque on the center stack identifies the car as a 1990 Sport Evolution model. The air conditioning was recharged in preparation for the sale.
The three-spoke M-Tech steering wheel fronts VDO instrumentation including a 260-km/h speedometer and an 8k-rpm tachometer as well as gauges for oil temperature, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows 186k kilometers (~116k miles), approximately 500 of which have been added under current ownership.
The 2.5-liter S14B25 inline-four features dual overhead camshafts and was factory rated at 238 horsepower with 177 lb-ft of torque. Service in preparation for the sale included replacing the air filter and air conditioning belt in addition to installing an S50 timing chain tensioner and performing an oil change. Compression test results are presented in the gallery.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a close-ratio Getrag G265 five-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential. The muffler was replaced in preparation for the sale.
