The Impreza 22B STi was produced between March and August 1998 to celebrate both Subaru’s 40th anniversary as well as its third consecutive FIA World Rally Championship. All examples were finished in World Rally Blue and featured a model-specific vented aluminum hood with a hood scoop, widened fenders, rocker extensions, and an adjustable rear wing. All examples were finished in World Rally Blue and featured a model-specific vented aluminum hood with a hood scoop, widened fenders, rocker extensions, and an adjustable rear wing. Additional equipment includes fog lights with STi-branded covers, STi fender badges, power-folding side mirrors, tinted windows, a rear window wiper, a “22B STi” trunk badge, and an STi branded exhaust tip. A replacement front Pleiades grille emblem was installed in February 2023.
Gold-finished 17″ BBS wheels are mounted with 235/40 Yokohama Advan Fleva tires. The ProDrive-tuned suspension package includes factory Bilstein shocks, a quick-ratio steering gear, and a carbon-fiber strut tower bar. Front suspension components along with the power steering pump and rack were removed, disassembled, and inspected in 2023. Stopping power is provided by red-finished Subaru-branded calipers over vented discs, and a brake fluid flush was performed in January 2023.
The right-hand-drive cabin features black cloth upholstery with blue inserts as well as matching door and interior panels. The manually adjustable Recaro front seats are accented by red stitching and STi embroidery on the backrests. Additional features include automatic climate control, power windows, and STi-branded pedals and door sill covers. An aftermarket stereo system was removed in 2023, and a replacement center console assembly, radio blanking plate, and leather shift knob were fitted. The air conditioning components were also removed and inspected at that time, and a replacement receiver and drier were installed. Holes from the removed speakers are visible on the rear parcel shelf.
The leather-wrapped steering wheel features red contrast stitching, and it fronts white-dial instrumentation consisting of a 9k-rpm tachometer, a 180-km/h speedometer, and auxiliary gauges. The digital odometer shows 186k kilometers (~115k miles), approximately 60 of which were added under current ownership.
The serialized plaque on the center console identifies this car as #135 in the series of 400.
The turbocharged and intercooled 2.2-liter EJ22G DOHC flat-four was factory rated at 280 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 268 lb-ft of torque at 3,200 rpm. Service in 2023 involved resurfacing the cylinder heads and replacing the head gaskets, timing belt, water pump, thermostat, spark plugs, and vacuum lines. A crack in the turbocharger heat shield has been repaired and refinished in high-temperature coating.
Power is sent to all four wheels via a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission with a driver-adjustable electronically locking center differential. Various transmission seals and the clutch pilot bearing were replaced in January 2023.
