The car was refinished in its factory shade of Light Ivory at the beginning of the build in 1995, upon completion of which the car became a catalyst for the 1999 founding of the R Gruppe by Cris Huergas and Freeman Thomas. The car retains an R Gruppe decal showing Huergas’ membership number 002, the first issued after number 001 was honorarily assigned to the late Steve McQueen.

Bright trim along the rocker panels and bumpers was deleted during the build, and black Porsche decals were affixed to the sides and rear decklid along with a Porsche crest decal on the hood. Additional features include vented Lexan side windows, rubber hood and decklid hold-downs, European-market headlights, front bumper vents, and a bullet-style driver’s side mirror. Various imperfections in the finish are shown up close in the photo gallery below.
Fuchs alloy wheels measuring 15×6” were mounted with 185/70 Michelin XWX tires in August 2022, as was a matching spare that is secured in the front compartment. Stopping power is handled by four-wheel disc brakes, and service between 2017 and 2018 included replacement of the master cylinder, pads, and front rotors.
The cabin houses a Recaro racing seat trimmed in black and equipped with a five-point harness, with matching upholstery over a passenger’s bucket seat with a latch-and-link lap belt. Interior modifications include lightened door panels with leather pull straps, rubber floor mats, a roll bar, and deletion of the rear seat backrests.
A MOMO Prototipo steering wheel sits ahead of a rotated 8k-rpm tachometer flanked by a 150-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer was repaired along with the speedometer in 2018 and shows 51k miles, approximately 200 of which have been added under current ownership. The clock was removed during Huergas’ build and replaced with a blanking plate.
The 2.0-liter Type 901/10 flat-six features Bosch mechanical fuel injection and was overhauled in 2015 by TLG Auto in North Hollywood, California. Work included the installation of replacement pistons, cylinders, main and rod bearings, valves, timing chains, and tensioners, as well as a rebuild of the injection pump and refurbishment of the throttle bodies. The distributor was overhauled in 2017, at which time the fuel pump was replaced. Service in 2022 involved fluid changes and replacement of the fuel valve, spark plugs, belts, batteries, powertrain mounts, and hood struts. Cylinder compression test results are pictured in the gallery below.
The five-speed manual transaxle was rebuilt in 2013, while service in 2022 included replacement of the clutch, flywheel, and rear main seal. Rebuilt axle shafts were also installed at that time, and the suspension was refreshed with replacement front strut inserts, Bilstein rear shock absorbers, and sway bar bushings.
The composite photo above includes number *6390554* stamped on the engine case, matching the number listed on the Kardex in the gallery below. Additional markings include transaxle number 130589 and October 1968 date codes on each wheel.
